Wonder Theatre Teen Troupe

Teen Troupe serves as the Young Ambassadors for Wonder Theatre Academy. This group consists of students who are in 6th-12th grade and who wish to have more performance opportunities as well as more in-depth instruction about musical theatre. Students should commit to performing in at least 4 performances per semester (2 at the theatre and 2 at an away location). Further information is detailed below:

The Wonder Theatre Academy is holding in-person auditions on July 30th from 6-8 PM. Teen Troupe serves as the Young Ambassadors for Wonder Theatre Academy.

  • Open to kids aged 6th-12th grade who are selected via audition. Students should prepare a one-minute song cut that showcases their vocal ability, and they should plan to bring an accompaniment track with them.  We will not have a pianist for this audition, so bringing sheet music is not necessary. 

  • Students who have participated in Teen Troupe in previous years must re-audition. 

  • If selected, students may participate in both the fall and spring semesters of Teen Troupe. They are not required to audition for the spring semester if they participate in the fall semester. 

  • Students should have some knowledge of musical theatre dance, as assessed in a dance call at auditions.  They should know basic musical theatre steps and be able to pick up choreography quickly.

  • Students should be able to sing on pitch and have a basic understanding of music theory. Students don't need to be fluent or advanced sight readers. 

  • Students should be committed and well-behaved with a genuine interest in musical theatre.

  • Students serve as Young Ambassadors of Wonder Theatre. They should be committed to performing in 4 live performances per semester. Students will also be participating in an Outreach opportunity with Eva’s Heroes. Rehearsals for this will be on Thursday nights during their Teen Troupe class time.

Class Schedule/Tuition/Perks:

  • Rehearsals are on Thursday evenings from 7 PM to 9 PM during the school year. The first rehearsal will be on August 27th. 

  • Teen Troupe will receive a t-shirt and discounted admission to masterclasses. They will also have access to workshops throughout the semester. Past workshops have been on topics such as Shakespeare, screenwriting, filmmaking, and guest choreographers. Student interest will be considered when planning workshops. 

  • Tuition for the semester is $400, and we do offer payment plans if needed. Students also receive a 5% discount on any additional classes they choose to take. 

  • One complimentary ticket to see the mainstage shows if they perform at the student night. Wonder Theatre will not provide supervision so parents should be aware of this. 

  • Students are first in line for the free tickets we receive from the Tobin Center.

Important Dates: 

  • The first day of class will be Thursday, August 27th, from 7 PM to 9 PM. Parents will be asked to attend a brief parent meeting to discuss expectations on the first day of class. 

  • September 19th: Addams Family Student Night 

  • September 24th: Dress Rehearsal for Eva’s Heroes show 

  • October 1st: Eva’s Heroes performance 

  • Season Reveal: October 30th with rehearsals on Wednesday, October 28th, and Thursday, October 29th.

  • November 7th: Mission Marquee performance 

  • November 28th: Mary Poppins student night 

  • Bravo Showcase: December 9th (dress rehearsal) and December 10th performance

  • There will be additional performance opportunities added throughout the semester that students will be informed about as they arise.

Meet your Teachers!

Karen Jimenez, Choreographer

Karen Jimenez is excited to serve as the Teen Troupe Choreographer this fall! Her love of dance began at age five, and she has been performing in San Antonio for the past three years. You may recognize her from My Fair Lady and Matilda this MainStage season.

Karen has been a Leg Up instructor at the Academy for the past year and has also choreographed Academy productions this season. She is passionate about helping young performers build confidence, creativity, and performance skills and looks forward to inspiring and fostering the talents of the next generation of performers through Teen Troupe this fall.

Keith Martinez, Music Director

Keith Martinez currently serves as an Assistant Director of Fine Arts for Northside ISD, where he provides leadership and support for over 60 elementary music specialists and 27 secondary choral directors across 116 campuses. In this role, Keith has focused on expanding choral music access by collaborating with principals and community stakeholders to implement choir clubs at campuses without choir programs. Additionally, he has been instrumental in procuring funding to connect Northside choir programs with local collegiate choir directors for high-level clinics and mentorship, bridging the gap between secondary and higher education.
